How to write a brief a recruiter can use

Most job descriptions are wish lists. A useful brief is shorter and answers five questions.

The quality of a shortlist depends on the quality of the brief. Here are the five questions we ask every client in the first call.

  • What will this person have done in their first 90 days? Outcomes are easier to hire for than responsibilities.
  • Which five skills are essential? If the list has fifteen, none of them is essential.
  • Who will they work with every day? Tell us about the manager and the team. This is where fit is decided.
  • What is the pay band and the latest start date? Being exact here saves everyone weeks.
  • Why did the last person in this role succeed or struggle? The answer usually tells us more than the job description.

With those answers we can write a one-page brief, agree it with you, and start the search knowing what we are looking for.
